Mark S, Mark R
Mark and I met at Peveril Stores, as is becoming tradition, for one of their awesome bacon, egg and sausage sandwiches before zooming up the hill to Rowter. We arrived just in time to see 10 cavers heading off over teh field to Rowter Hole so we abandoned our plans of a speedy trip to the end and went instead to Eldon Hole.
Its been a while since I was last there and not much had changed. There had obviously been a really good clearance trip done while we were in China but the shark cage at the bottom of the shaft was still there.
We spent all day hammering poles, capping the odd rock and fixing length after length of scaffolding. It was slow work, we would fix a piece temporarily in order to add or remove another before taking the first piece back off again. In this way we slowly inched our way diagonally into the choke of loose packed rock. By the end of the day we had created a space large enough for someone to get into (just about) with a dense roof of scaffolding poles, props, supports and struts to keep us feeling safe.
The framework was literally and metaphorically now in place for the next trip... which as it happens was tomorrow :)
Good to be back.
